Review: The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black!

Children can have a cruel, absolute sense of justice. Children can kill a monster and feel quite proud of themselves. A girl can look at her brother and believe they’re destined to be a knight and a bard who battle evil. She can believe she’s found the thing she’s been made for.

Hazel lives with her brother, Ben, in the strange town of Fairfold where humans and fae exist side by side. The faeries’ seemingly harmless magic attracts tourists, but Hazel knows how dangerous they can be, and she knows how to stop them. Or she did, once.

At the center of it all, there is a glass coffin in the woods. It rests right on the ground and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives. Hazel and Ben were both in love with him as children. The boy has slept there for generations, never waking.

Until one day, he does…

As the world turns upside down, Hazel tries to remember her years pretending to be a knight. But swept up in new love, shifting loyalties, and the fresh sting of betrayal, will it be enough?

My Review

I really had to force myself to read this one.  It’s disappointing because I was excited for it.

I have to be honest and say that I almost gave up, I’m really trying hard this year to read books that I’m enjoying and if I have to DNF a book then it’s ok.  But, I ended up making it to the half way point and it was like everything changed.  I felt like I was reading an entirely different book, it didn’t feel like a chore to read anymore.  Everything just picked up.  The plot got more interesting.  The action was awesome.  Some scenes were so vivid that I felt like I was actually there.  I was just so happy that I made myself continue reading to the end.

The plot was what really intrigued me from the start.  A town where humans co-exist with fae, kind of.  There’s a faerie prince that’s in a glass coffin.  I mean, come on!  How freaking spectacular does this sound!?  But, there’s always a but, it did start to get boring, nothing was really happening and everything was kind of flat.  I felt really disconnected with the characters and the world.  I didn’t care what happened but again thankfully that all turned around.  The world became more vivid, the characters more redeemable and likable. It was like I forgot that I put down one book and picked up another one.  Complete 180.

And the characters were also something I had problems with.  They just seemed very ‘blah’.

Hazel was all girl power!  So, she definitely had that going for her.  But I felt like that’s all there was to her.  I didn’t learn her favorite color or her favorite food.  Even at the end of the book, I still don’t feel like I got to know her.  Which is actually disappointing because on the surface she’s so fierce and probably would be a good friend to have.

Her brother, Ben, was also hard to figure out.  I did like him better then Hazel.  We learn that he’s a musician but only because of a ‘gift’ from a faerie.  I would’ve like for him to go a bit beyond that I guess.  We also learn that he’s gay, but not the stereotypical gay guy in literature.  Which I loved.  I felt like we got a little bit more with him.  I do have to say that I liked him most when he was with Severin.  Beverin shipper right here!

Jack, who is Ben’s best friend, is a changeling.  That whole storyline was fascinating and I really enjoyed it.  I loved how he was at war with himself, whether to be fae or human.

The horned prince did not disappoint.  He was every bit elegant and creepy as I imagined and had that immortal feel to him.  Like with the way he talked and acted.  Ugh, I loved him!

It’s really a shame to say but the first part kind of ruined the book for me.  Everything important happened in the second half.  All the twists and turns.  And there was really nothing in the first half.  Sure, we know all about the fae and the horned boy in the coffin and we know from the synopsis that he wakes up.  I guess I just wanted more.  I don’t know.  This is just so hard review and rate!

But if I had to recommend this to anyone I would probably suggest that lovers of the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa and the Splintered Trilogy by A.G. Howard would enjoy The Darkest Part of the Forest.

Review: Chasing Brooklyn by Lisa Schroeder

Restless souls and empty hearts

Brooklyn can't sleep. Her boyfriend, Lucca, died only a year ago, and now her friend Gabe has just died of an overdose. Every time she closes her eyes, Gabe's ghost is there waiting for her. She has no idea what he wants or why it isn't Lucca visiting her dreams.

Nico can't stop. He's always running, trying to escape the pain of losing his brother, Lucca. But when Lucca's ghost begins leaving messages, telling Nico to help Brooklyn, emotions come crashing to the surface.

As the nightmares escalate and the messages become relentless, Nico reaches out to Brooklyn. But neither of them can admit that they're being haunted. Until they learn to let each other in, not one soul will be able to rest.

My Review

Chasing Brooklyn was a very different experience for me.  I haven’t read anything in verse before.  It’s definitely something I would like to get into, so if any of you have any recommendations for me, that would be spectacular.  I do know that I really want to read more of Lisa Schroeder’s work.  Her writing is so beautiful and flowed effortlessly.

It was really difficult, in a good way, to read Chasing Brooklyn.  The grief and pain that two different people are feeling is just so heavy.  The way that they get over things.  Their whole process of doing things and the way their lives make them choose to do things and how to feel.

Brooklyn was such a real character.  I felt everything she felt.  The guilt and loneliness.   She’s plagued by nightmares and not sure what they’re trying to tell her.  All the conflicting emotions which, of course, make her feel worse.  I felt for her like she was my own friend.

Niko is an extremely insecure person.  Feeling like he’s living in his younger brother’s shadow, never thinking he’s good enough and feeling the need to become his brother in order to make the people around him who loved his brother, happy.  It’s a lot of pressure and definitely messes with your mind.  Again, I felt for him.

When Niko and Brooklyn find each other, they try and help each other to heal.  It’s a really beautiful story but, to be honest, I was a bit afraid that they would become dependent on each other and not be able to fully heal without the other but I was definitely proved wrong.  They knew when to take a step back and try to evaluate things on their own.  That’s strength right there.  And a good lesson to be learned.

All in all, Chasing Brooklyn was a heart wrenchingly beautiful story.  If you are a fan of If I Stay by Gayle Forman, then I would definitely suggest picking this book up.

Waiting on Wednesday (24): I Was Here by Gayle Forman

Hosted by Breaking the Spine!

Cody and Meg were inseparable.
Two peas in a pod.
Until . . . they weren’t anymore.

When her best friend Meg drinks a bottle of industrial-strength cleaner alone in a motel room, Cody is understandably shocked and devastated. She and Meg shared everything—so how was there no warning? But when Cody travels to Meg’s college town to pack up the belongings left behind, she discovers that there’s a lot that Meg never told her. About her old roommates, the sort of people Cody never would have met in her dead-end small town in Washington. About Ben McAllister, the boy with a guitar and a sneer, who broke Meg’s heart. And about an encrypted computer file that Cody can’t open—until she does, and suddenly everything Cody thought she knew about her best friend’s death gets thrown into question.

I Was Here is Gayle Forman at her finest, a taut, emotional, and ultimately redemptive story about redefining the meaning of family and finding a way to move forward even in the face of unspeakable loss.

2015 Prequel & Sequel Challenge!

Since one of my goals in 2015 is to complete at least 10 series, I figured that signing up for this challenge would be perfect to keep me on track.

Here are the details:

1 point for each novella
2 points for each full length novel
10 points for
each completed series
(A series is considered 3 books or more, you can read a duology but can't earn the bonus 10 points.  Also, you don't get points for the first book.)

Newbie: 10-25 points
Amateur: 26-50 points
Advanced: 51-75 points
Professional: 76 -100 points
Veteran: 101+ points

I am aiming for Veteran status!
As long as I reach 101 points, I'm good.  But if I manage to surpass that?  Well, then that's just awesome!

The way I post updates is tricky.  I think I will use this as a master post and update it with all the books.  But I also think I will make an update post every couple of months.  I will also use that little button up at the top at the end of all my reviews that fall into this challenge!  Sound good?

If you want more of an explanation then feel free to go to Jessi's original post here!

Review: Splintered (Splintered #1) by A.G. Howard!

My first review of the New Year!  Woo!

This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

My Review

Let me start of by saying that I love Morpheus.  Love him to death.  I want him!  Please, Ms. Howard, can I please have him?!  I will take good care of him, I promise!

*Cough Cough* Anyway, I really enjoyed Splintered.  It was probably one of my favorite reads of 2014.  I just loved this creepy world that was so familiar and yet so new at the same time.

The world is so vivid and the way Howard describes everything really makes you think twice about Lewis Carroll’s version and which one is actually ‘real’.  It really messes with your head and I love it!  Howard unraveled the original story and wove her own little details to make her own story, making you almost believe that her details are what really happened in Wonderland.  Absolutely brilliant.

Alyssa is our main character and I really loved her.  She cares about her family and friends.  She’s determined.  I love her style as well, all thrift shoppy and what not.

Jeb, unfortunately, kind of fell flat for me.  He’s a great guy, don’t get me wrong.  But sometimes the way he would treat Alyssa as if she’s a five year old was a major turn off for me and made me not really buy their budding relationship.  He’s definitely loyal though and cares about her deeply but I guess I just can't get with their romance and lack of chemistry.  He just seems like a big brother figure.

Morpheus on the other hand is just so freaking…ugh!  I love him, so so much!  He’s all mysterious and sarcastic and arrogant and I love it!  I can’t even describe my love for him.  Ultimate book boyfriend here ladies!  And I am literally on my knees Ms. Howard, please can I have him?

The whole storyline was fantastic.  All of the Liddell descendants are cursed and eventually go crazy.  Alyssa goes down the rabbit hole to reverse the curse by undoing the original Alice’s mistakes.  It’s all just brilliant.

Splintered doesn’t end on the biggest cliffhanger, which is good because I don’t have Unhinged and I won’t be able to until February.  But, I can’t wait to see what Howard has in store for Unhinged and then in Ensnared!

If you are an Alice in Wonderland fan, or a fan of retellings or fantasy then you need this book in your life ASAP.  Like yesterday, ASAP.

December Wrap-Up/January TBR!

I feel like I did alright in December.  I read 9 books, got half way through rereading Order of the Phoenix and am about 20% of the way into Shatter Me.  Pretty good considering what month it is and everything.

So, here's what I read!

 23198826   9897164   93750   12558285   6556855   78411   78418   438492

Started but didn't finish:

TBR
In January I'm looking to finish Order of the Phoenix as well as Shatter Me.

 11614718   9593911   9593913
I read the first two books like five billion years ago and for some reason just haven't read the last one.  But I'm trying to stick to my goals and finish as many series as I can.

13605723
It's kind of the same deal with this series.  Except I have an ARC of The Return, which is a spin off series, that I got at BEA.  So, I've been trying to catch up on this series so I can read The Return in February.

20958632
I got an ARC of this at BEA and can't wait to read it!  Look for my review very soon.

 22553270
I received this book to review.  Can't wait to get to it.  The premise sounds interesting!

And, if I manage to get through all of those, I really want to start this book right here:

10987
This series is just gold.  If you haven't picked up the Outlander books yet then you really need to.  And then watch the show cause it's amazing!

What was your favorite book you read in December?  What are you most looking forward to reading in January?  Let me know in the comments!
