Review: Never Fade (The Darkest Minds #2) by Alexandra Bracken!

Spoiler Alert for The Darkest Minds!

Ruby never asked for the abilities that almost cost her her life. Now she must call upon them on a daily basis, leading dangerous missions to bring down a corrupt government and breaking into the minds of her enemies. Other kids in the Children’s League call Ruby “Leader”, but she knows what she really is: a monster.

When Ruby is entrusted with an explosive secret, she must embark on her most dangerous mission yet: leaving the Children’s League behind. Crucial information about the disease that killed most of America’s children—and turned Ruby and the others who lived into feared and hated outcasts—has survived every attempt to destroy it. But the truth is only saved in one place: a flashdrive in the hands of Liam Stewart, the boy Ruby once believed was her future—and who now wouldn’t recognize her.

As Ruby sets out across a desperate, lawless country to find Liam—and answers about the catastrophe that has ripped both her life and America apart—she is torn between old friends and the promise she made to serve the League. Ruby will do anything to protect the people she loves. But what if winning the war means losing herself?

My Review

Alexandra Bracken is trying to kill me.  I really think she’s trying to kill me.  This series is quickly becoming one of my all time favorites and Bracken is becoming an auto buy author.  I just can’t deal with this series!  Oh my God!  I laugh, I chuckle, I cry, I sob, I gasp.  I don’t know what to feel!  I feel all the feels and I don’t like it!

So we left off with our hearts broken.  We don’t know if Chubs is alive and Liam is wiped clean of his memories of Ruby.  I was destroyed!  And I really didn’t know how I was going to feel with Liam, Chubs and Zu gone.  They were the ultimate group  and I loved them together.  I knew we would see Liam at some point because Ruby's mission is to find him but I just didn't know when we'd see him and what state we would find him in.   But, we did get some new characters in the form of Vida and Jude.  Jude is that annoying little brother that always follows you around wanting to know what you’re doing but you can’t help but love him.  And Vida is annoying and mean in kinda a bad way but she definitely grows on you.  And I love how she calls Jude “Judith” and I love how he doesn’t mind at all.  Oh Jude, you crack me up you little weirdo.

These characters definitely added a lot to this story and gave you yet another side to this messed up world.  There’s so many sides and we’re only scratching the surface.

Ruby.  Oh, I love Ruby.  In The Darkest Minds she was a weak little girl and by the end she was just so strong.  In Never Fade, we see her kind of closed off.  She’s this soldier now and is leading Ops and gets shit done.  She’s a fighter.  She’s knows when to turn off her emotions and do what she needs to do to help not just herself but her friends too.  And I feel like she’s so relatable and extremely likable even though she’s not the same Ruby we met in The Darkest Minds.  We are in her head and hear her inner dialogue and know how conflicted she is about everything.  Her emotions are all over the place and she wants to be strong for everyone else because she’s a leader now but at the same time she just wants to break down.  This, right here, is an amazing character and one of my all time favorite heroines at the moment.  I still have to read In the Afterlight, so I don’t know if she’ll do something to piss me off but as of right now, she’s at the top.

Never Fade is a sequel so obviously I can’t get into detail.  But just know that this is an emotional rollercoaster of a book.  And the end will have you crying and pumping your fist in the air screaming “Yes!”

I just can’t get over how much I love this trilogy and how quickly I fell in love with the characters.

If you have yet to pick up this series, please do it.  It is absolutely excellent.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to go read In the Afterlight.  (By the way, just finished Sparks Rise.  I’m done!)
