When Ruby woke up on
her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming
enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police.
Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government
“rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease
that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have
emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot
control.
Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.
When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.
When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.

My Review
Whoa. Give me a
couple of seconds. Oh, My God!
Speechless. What are
words? Can’t compute. Nothing.
There is a bit of a story surrounding this book. I started it, used my favorite bookmark from
a museum, while riding down to Florida one year. And
for some reason I stopped reading it. I
was totally enjoying it but for some reason I just stopped. I guess I got busy. I don’t know.
But anyways, I’m participating in this here challenge and decided to
finally finish it and the whole series.
And I also found the bookmark!
And ended up finally completely this book that ended up wrecking
me. Completely wrecked me.
This whole book made me a nervous wreck! That’s how on the edge of your seat you
actually are. My muscles and joints
literally ached while reading this because I was clenching the book so
hard. Poor book. I'm sorry.
The plot is incredible and I love the superpower bit. I absolutely loved it but I did feel like it
followed some of the cliché dystopian formulas.
But I do not care. Didn’t take me
out of the story nor did it keep me from loving it.
And the characters!
Ruby! I adored her. She just kept getting better and better as
the book progressed. She started as weak
and pretty pitiful, to be honest, but still lovable. And, by the end, turned into this ‘I am Woman Hear
Me Roar’ kind of girl. Such an awesome
character.
Liam. Oh, Liam. He brings a whole new meaning to the term ‘Book
Boyfriend’. Am I right, ladies? He’s absolutely hilarious, his sense of humor
totally won me over but it was really his protectiveness of his friends, his family, that was so endearing.
Chubs, Zu and now Ruby are his family and he’ll do anything, absolutely
anything, to keep them out of harms way.
And his banter with Chubs literally had me laughing out loud. His whole outlook on life was a breath of
fresh air. So positive and
optimistic. Ugh, and the way he says ‘darlin’’
all time. Oy vey. Move over Adrian Ivashkov. Liam is in the running!
Chubs and Zu were also amazing characters. Zu didn’t even talk and yet said so much and
was such and adorable girly girl. The
way she freaks out over anything pink is just so freaking cute. And Chubs.
So pessimistic, but in a really funny dramatic kind of way.
The end. Ahhh the end! I’m dead.
It left me dead with my heart torn out of my chest and thrown on the
floor with a bunch of elephants stampeding over it. Don’t ask me where the elephants came
from. But I don’t know how I’ll go
on. Luckily, as I am typing this out, I
have read In Time and am actually reading Never Fade, so it’s all good.
Anyway, if you can’t guess by my complete gush fest over The
Darkest Minds, I absolutely loved it.
It’s an awesome dystopian.
Awesome sci-fi. Awesome book in
general. If, for some reason, you have
put off reading this book, like me, then go pick it up now. Do it! Do it now, I say!
